Topic 2 Ways of finding a job in the country

There are several options when looking for a job in Lithuania. Depending on the purpose of non-EU national staying in Lithuania, the ways and procedure of finding employment may differ. For example, third country nationals who intends to enter and stay in Lithuania on the ground of employment should, first of all, find a job and then the employment procedures may be started. It is recommended to start looking for a job before coming to Lithuania.

For the asylum beneficiaries or migrants entering Lithuania on other grounds, who does not need to obtain work permit, the employment procedure may start when they arrive in Lithuania.

However, in both cases, the ways of finding a job usually include:

  • Individual job search;
  • Registering at the Employment Service;
  • Contacting a recruitment agencies.

The best place to start looking for a job is most popular job sites. It is also advisable to explore company of interest career pages, social networks, Linkedin.  A person looking for a job also can send his/her CV directly to a chosen employer.

The above websites are well-known and all have English interfaces, but most of the job descriptions are in Lithuanian, so additional translation will be needed. Examples of services provided under different circumstances:

If a person has a profession, occupation, and (or) work experience in demand, a break between employments is no greater than 2 years or is a graduate:

local ES offices provide job search services, together with the unemployed agree on an employment activity plan oriented towards as immediate employment as possible, provide training on how to use the ES’s e. services.

If a person does not have any profession or the acquired one is not currently in demand, does not have job experience, has not been employed for more than two years, but intends to acquire a profession in demand and to gain job skills:

ES offices provide counseling and help to develop job search skills, together with the unemployed agree on an employment activity plan oriented towards gaining or renewing a profession or working skills.

If a person has a profession, occupation, and (or) work experience in demand, a break between employments no greater than 2 years or is a graduate, but unwilling to accept job offers and start working according to his/her qualification, is not aware of the job search methods or has other problems that hinder job search:

local ES offices organize motivational seminars, provide information and counseling services, together with the unemployed agree on an employment activity plan oriented towards the temporary employment measures and employment.

Employment service also offers one of the Lithuania’s largest database of job vacancies and jobseekers, which is updated constantly. Their website provides a single online job search and supply system. Statistical information is also available (ex.: data about various parameters of the labour market, both national and territorial, professions that are on demand).

Recruitment agencies can help to choose the right career path, inform about job vacancies, help to write the CV, and organise courses and seminars. These recruitment agencies are usually free of charge (but may offer additional paid services such as CV preparation, personalised career counselling, etc.).
