Topic 11 Intercultural Fluency

Being able to communicate with individuals with a different cultural background than oneself. This helps the individuals and especially the employees to be successful in a diverse workplace.

Cultural fluency means familiarity with:

  • Culture and their natures
  • how they work
  • the ways they intertwine with our relationships in times of conflict and harmony.

Cultural fluency means awareness of several dimensions of culture, including communication.

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), intercultural fluency skill includes the ability to:

  • Value, respect, and learn from diverse cultures, races, ages, genders, sexual orientations, and religions
  • Demonstrate openness, inclusiveness, sensitivity, and the ability to interact respectfully with all people
  • Understand individuals’ differences
